Every year, thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens are born, and many end up in
animal shelters or living as strays. Our county animal shelters are overrun with animals
needing homes. By preventing unplanned litters, fewer animals face homelessness, or
euthanasia. These procedures also make it easier for shelters to find loving homes for
the animals already waiting to be adopted. In addition to reducing overpopulation,
spaying and neutering provide important health benefits.

Spaying female animals greatly lowers the risk of infections and breast cancer, especially when
performed before the first heat cycle. Neutering male animals eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
and can reduce prostate issues. Because these surgeries prevent certain reproductive diseases, pets
often live longer, healthier lives.

Spaying and neutering can also improve an animal's behavior. Neutered males are generally less
likely to roam in search of a mate, reducing their risk of being injured by traffic or getting into fights
with other animals. They may also be less likely to mark territory or display aggressive behaviors.

Spayed females no longer experience heat cycles, which can be stressful for both the pet and the owner.
While every animal has its own personality, these procedures often make pets much calmer.

By spaying and neutering pets, owners help reduce the number of stray animals, lessen the burden
on shelters, and promote healthier, happier lives for their companions. These simple surgical procedures
have a lasting positive impact, making them an important step in protecting animal welfare and
creating safer communities for pets and people alike.

PSV has made helping control animal overpopulation, in Macon County, its main mission by financially
assisting low-income families with the procedures. If you are interested in having your pet spayed or neutered,
